Zoysia grass is a popular choice for homeowners who have mild winters and golf course fairways. It’s a low-maintenance, warm-season lawn option.

What is Zoysia grass?

Zoysia grass, a warm-season turfgrass that has a light-green colour, is very popular for home and commercial lawns. The grass can thrive in temperatures between 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit but will go dormant if temperatures fall below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it ideal for areas with long, warm seasons and mild winters.

Zoysia grass can withstand winter temperatures, and then come back to life in spring unlike other warm-season grasses. Zoysia grass can withstand heavy foot traffic and is resistant to drought and part-shade. It also grows densely with a stolon based root system that outcompetes many other weeds.

Three Types of Zoysia Grass

There are three main types of zoysia gras:

  1. Zoysia japonica. This is the most common species of zoysiagrass.Zoysia japonicaThis grass is also known as Japanese lawn grass, Korean lawn grass and has the highest tolerance to cold and drought. It is also the fastest-growing. There are three varieties: Meyer, El Toro and Zenith. Zenith zoysia is the only cultivar you can buy as zoysia seed, not sod or plugs.
  2. Zoysia Matrella. This species is also known as Manila grass and has denser leaves than the others.japonicaAndtenuifolia.Zoysia matrellaThis is a higher maintenance rate thanZoysia japonica. This variety is more tolerant of cold and slower to grow. There are two varieties: Zeon and Diamond.
  3. Zoysia tenuifolia. Also known as Korean velvet grass.Zoysia tenuifoliaIt has a soft and fine texture. This grass tends to grow in mounds or clumps, rather than a smooth lawn. This grass is less popular than other types and can be used as an ornamental plant. Emerald zoysia is the most popular variety.

How to Plant Zoysia grass from Sod

There are many ways to plant zoysiagrass, but sod is the best. It can take up to a year for zoysia grass plugs and sprigs to establish fully. They also require full sun and careful weeding to grow.

  1. Select the best place to plant.. Zoysia grass grows best in full sunlight and needs at least six hours of direct sun per day to grow. Established zoysia grass can tolerate moderate shade, but will not grow well in areas that are shaded by trees or shrubs.
  2. Prepare the planting siteRemove all rocks, existing grass or weeds from the area. You should remove any debris, grass, rocks, or existing grass from the area. To loosen the soil and improve aeration, you can use a tiller if it is extremely compacted. To level the soil, use a garden rake. Avoid low spots or mounds in your lawn.
  3. Modify the soil. After the site has been prepared, add one inch to the soil surfaceCompostOr with organic fertilizer according to the instructions on the package. To ensure that your soil is healthy, perform a soil test. The soil pHIt is about 6.5 with moderate levels of iron, phosphorus and potassium.
  4. Your sod should be spread. Zoysia grass will grow faster if it is in active growth. Experts recommend that zoysia be planted when the temperatures are above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This is usually in late spring or early Summer. When it is time to plant your Zoysia grass, you should roll each rectangle of sod out and place them in an elongated brick-like arrangement, with the edges tightly against each other.
  5. Get water thoroughly. To ensure that soil contact is maintained with your zoysia grass lawn, water it immediately after you have laid the sod. Seed-to-soil contact allows the seed to receive water from soil, so it can germinate properly.
  6. Nurture the roots until they growIt takes about two to three weeks for sod to firmly root. It usually takes two to three weeks for sod to become firmly rooted. The grass will be vulnerable during this period and should be taken care of. While your lawn is growing, you should water it twice daily with one quarter inch of water. Avoid walking on it or trampling it.
