Sodding saves you from the efforts of growing grass from seeds and gives you a lush, green lawn. It doesn’t mean that new sod care has to be difficult.
If you don’t take care of its health, your fresh grass carpet can quickly become brittle.
These are some tips to help you take care of your new sod.
You need to water your regularly to support the growth of grass. Fresh sod requires plenty of water to root in the soil.
Keep the soil moist for the first few days by watering it three times daily. Then, you should water it only once a day for the next few weeks. To keep your lawn healthy, you should reduce the amount of water you give it. Your lawn will require watering 2-3 times per week after 2 to 3 weeks.
Avoid Fertilizing Sod
Sod requires nutrients to grow. After installing sod, you should not use fertilizers for more than a month.
After sod installation, apply a layer of fertilizer for 4-5 weeks. Organic fertilizers are better than chemical products.
Keep an eye on Sod’s health
After you have installed new sod, your lawn might appear healthy. It’s still very vulnerable at this stage. It can be damaged by pests, fungi and diseases.
You should monitor your lawn for signs of disease and potential damage. To keep your lawn healthy, notify a sodding company immediately if you see any signs of disease.
Do not step on sod
A few people forget that fresh soil is fragile and easily damaged. They walk on it without thinking. Sod doesn’t last long.
Remember that sod is not able to withstand heavy foot traffic for several weeks after installation. Walking over it can cause havoc. Keep traffic to a minimum until the soil roots.
Deter Pests and Wild Animals
Fresh sod is a major enemy of wild animals like raccoons and pests. Your lawn can be destroyed before you even know it.
Organic pesticides can be used to control pests and insects on your lawn. To keep small animals away, you can also install temporary nets around your lawn.
Do not mow your lawn
Mowing boosts the health of your lawn and improves its appearance. You don’t have to mow your lawn within the first 3 weeks or you could damage its roots.
Get rid of all weeds before you mow. Then, trim 1/2 inch of new grass.
