Spring lawn care prepares your lawn for the summer.

These are six simple steps you can follow.

Clean up your Lawn

Winter is a time when weeds can litter your lawn and thatch builds up. Thatch refers to a layer of dead or living grass shoots stems and roots between your soil and your grass blades.

The first step to spring-cleaning is to rake and remove all leaves. You should also rake your lawn, especially if the rake is buried deeply.

Raking also removes any dead matted areas where the glass blades are stuck together. Raking has a double effect, and does more than leaf removal.

A metal or wire rake is better than a plastic one.

Aeration

Lawn compaction can occur throughout the year, particularly in areas with high traffic. This can also be caused by a moist winter, where the soil has compacted.

The answer is simple – lawn fertilization. Either use a fork or aeration shoes to aerate your lawn, or you can hire a lawn core machine from your local Garden Centre. This is a great winter job, but it adds so many benefits.

Fertilizing

Spring fertilizing is a great way to jump-start your lawn and help it recover from winter’s effects like browning and thinning. It’s also great for maintaining healthy soil – a healthy lawn means a happy soil!

  • Liquid fertilizers have the active ingredients that will help your lawn reach its maximum potential. liquid fertilizer can be used quickly to stimulate growth and greening up of your lawn. However, you should apply it more often. You can apply them with a sprayer or your hose.
  • Granular Slow Release Fertilizer can be a better value than other fertilizers if you want to feed your lawn for three months. You can apply slow release fertilizer by using a push spreader or a hand-held device.
  • Traditional Fertilizer can cause rapid growth and greening up of your lawn.
  • Organic Fertilizer is the most natural and environmentally-friendly fertilizer product available. True organic fertilizers contain only vegetable or animal matter, and are free from artificial or synthetic substances. You can apply the fertilizer by spreading it or manually depending on which product you have.

Watering

The soil is still not warm enough to be considered spring and the nights remain cool as we enter the season. Deep watering might leave the soil/lawn exposed for longer than you expected. If your lawn is dry, you can test it by putting your finger in the soil.

You need to be careful with watering as you move into the summer. To help the lawn absorb more moisture, water early in the morning for 15 minutes. Alternately, water the areas that need it the most (drying out faster) or those you want to keep green.

Weeds

Spring is also about removing pesky grass weeds. Depending on whether the weed you are using is an annual or perennial , which pre-emergent herbicide that you use will determine .

If you have an issue with Crabgrass then fertilizing in spring would be a good idea.

Pre-emergence Herbicides are used to control weeds before they can grow.

Perennial weeds such as Dandelions can be treated with post-emergent herbicides. These perennials can be removed by hand first. Make sure to remove all roots.

Make sure you check that the herbicide is appropriate for your lawn before purchasing it.

Mowing

Springtime is the best time to revitalize your lawn and your lawnmower.

Sharp blades are essential for healthy lawn mowing. Make sure you check your blades. You can either replace or grind the blades yourself, or hire a local mower shop.
